Greater Opportunities
Throughout the year, we conduct a number of events here at the IAW-US Headquarters in Berkeley that address special topics. These focused courses permit a more thorough treatment of important subjects. Most are open to the public – all are welcome to join. However, several cover advanced material that require a minimum Student Level (SL) certification in WingChun. Please read descriptions below for more details.

Event Descriptions
Application Class | Prerequisite: None
Uncover the full extent of WingChun's effectiveness – from form to function. Every movement in the system has multiple direct and practical applications. Enhance your appreciation for the comprehensiveness of this art.
Chi Sao Class | Prerequisite: 5 SL
Refine the function of your contact reflexes. Your fluency in sequences from the Chi Sao (Adhering Arms) Sections will be developed step-by-step. As a result, your physical awareness and conceptual understanding of these important tactile training programs will be enhanced.
Combat Class | Prerequisite: None
Competently deal with any Self-Defense situation through assertive action. Examine the flexible usage of your body's weapons – feet, hands, knees, elbows – in changing combat contexts. Please bring protective gear (groin protector, hand, elbow, knee, and shin pads).
Core Concepts | Prerequisite: None
Establish the functionality of your WingChun through a solid grasp of fundamentals. This is a series of classes covering ideas which are essential to the development of vital skills: relaxed speed, correct distance, and fluid power.
Degree Program | Prerequisite: None
Pursue professional-quality proficiency of the IAW curriculum – including WingChun terminology, the theory and practice of Form, Lat Sao, Chi Sao, and Application. Strategies and methods of introduction and instruction are also presented that improve the ability to communicate WingChun effectively. Currently, there are two Degree Certifications available at the IAW-US HQ. The Assistant Degree (AD) covers the full SL 1-2 curriculum in 6 Degree Modules conducted monthly over 6 months culminating in a Degree Examination. The Instructor Degree I (ID-I) covers the full SL 3-5 curriculum in 12 Degree Modules conducted monthly over 1 year also culminating in a Degree Examination. Anyone can participate, but a minimum of SL 7 and SL 9 is necessary for AD and ID-I Certification, respectively.
Escrima Workshop | Prerequisite: None
Learn the IAW weapons system, consisting of four – Serrada, Dos Manos, Espada y Daga, Combat – dynamic programs which progressively free the direct and explosive use of your body. Promote rapid visual recognition and natural reflexive capabilities, as well as the confidence to trust them in action. A clear and intuitive method valuable for all, with or without previous experience.
Lat Sao Class | Prerequisite: None
Define the active response of your visual perception (Read). Your proficiency in sequences from the Lat Sao (Casting Arms) Programs will be solidified. Thus, elevating the immediacy and correctness of your movements when countering any opponent's unpredictable attacks (Feed).
Long Pole Workshop | Prerequisite: 8 SL
Extend through your limbs and beyond your body. Long Pole training complements the weaponless methods of the WingChun system by developing elements of deep power and core stability.
Pre-Test | Prerequisite: 8 SL
Confirm your ability in the Advanced SL (9 SL-PPL). Run through the full curriculum and receive specific topical evaulation on a 4-point scale for each skill. This includes your performance and understaning of every Program up to and including your Testing SL. For instance, to pursue 9 SL, you must demonstrate proficiency in the Form, Lat Sao, Chi Sao, and Application Flows of SL 1-9.
Program Review | Prerequisite: None
Take advantage of a summary overview to make final corrections before your Testing. All aspects of your SL Program will be evaluated to address deficiencies and ensure competence. Even if you don't plan on Testing, you will receive valuable feedback on your standard.
Special Class | Prerequisite: 5 SL
Explore the wide-ranging Flow of WingChun in greater depth. Various topics of specific interest will be presented in refreshing and accessible ways. Gain new useful insights into previous SL’s and catch a glimpse of the intelligence of advanced material.
Spring Camp | Prerequisite: None
Spend a couple days away from it all to focus deeply on your training. Enjoy a refreshing trip outdoors to bond with each other and WingChun. Don’t miss these very special weekend occasions for intensive practice and extensive fun.
Technical Class | Prerequisite: 6 SL
Develop competence and sureness in the high-level performance of WingChun. Key movements and core concepts from various Programs are dissected and analyzed in detail, facilitating a greater resolution of understanding and display of proficiency.
Technician Preparation | Prerequisite: 9 SL
Get ready to join an elite group of practitioners in the IAW. Crossing the threshold from the Student Levels to the Technician Grades is both a great honor and a great task. Refine the specific details and review the general principles that will prepare you in depth for a difficult and important test.
Technician Workshop | Prerequisite: PPL
Delve into movement patterns of the Technician Grade (TG) curriculum. You will realize full function of the Tsum Kiu Set through immersion in the Second to Seventh Chi Sao Sections, with an emphasis on functional refinement and conceptual integration.
WingChun Seminar | Prerequisite: None
Come together with our entire WingChun community for several rewarding hours of lively interaction. Students, Assistants, and Instructors engage intensively in small groups, each receiving conscientious explanation and expert guidance. Testing and certification for advancement is also conducted. Please check to ensure that you have fulfilled the requirements for promotion.
